New PBSC initiatives to help students overcome financial barriers to education

Palm Beach State College has launched two initiatives to help students eliminate financial barriers so that they can continue to pursue their educational dreams.
The “Restart Your Dream” initiative offers up to 2,000 students who attended from fall 2017 to summer 2021 but stopped a chance to come back for free in-state tuition on any number of credits for the fall 2022 term. The Rotary Club of Boca Raton issues historic scholarship gift to PBSC

More than 20 students’ lives were forever changed after the Foundation for Palm Beach State College was awarded a historic $153,000 gift from the Rotary Club of Boca Raton to establish scholarships for students pursuing vocational and career programs, including public safety, emergency response, trades and STEM related fields.
The gift is the largest and one of several the Rotary Club has given to the College Foundation over the years to help students succeed.

State allocates $25 million for Lox Groves campus building

Lawmakers have allocated an additional $25 million in the state budget recently signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis toward construction of a Dental & Medical Services Technology Building at the Palm Beach State College Loxahatchee Groves campus.
Plans are to relocate the existing Dental Hygiene and Surgical Services Associate in Science degree programs and the Dental Assisting career certificate program from the Lake Worth campus to what will become the second building at the Dennis P. Ruane to serve as head men’s basketball coach

Palm Beach State College Athletics has selected Michael Ruane to serve as its new head men’s basketball coach. He officially begins May 2.
He was selected for the role from a national pool of more than 200 candidates.
Ruane has been the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Conn. for the past 22 years. Lox Groves campus hosts STEAM Day as part of new partnership

Palm Beach State College’s Loxahatchee Groves campus hosted its inaugural STEAM Day as part of a new partnership with Loxahatchee Groves Elementary School to increase community engagement.

PBSC receives ESGR Seven Seals Award

Palm Beach State College has received the U.S. Department of Defense’s prestigious Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Seven Seals Award for its initiatives and leadership to support student service members and veterans.

PBSC unveils suicide prevention bench in Belle Glade

Palm Beach State College’s Belle Glade campus held a ribbon cutting ceremony Oct. 26 to unveil a suicide prevention and awareness bench on campus. The bench, located on the patio entrance of CRA (Classrooms A) building, is the second to be placed on a PBSC campus.

Scarpino named PBSC athletics director

John Scarpino has been named Palm Beach State College’s new athletics director. The announcement comes as the program transitions this fall from Division I to Division II in the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Belle Glade campus awarded grant to expand access to textbooks

The Palm Beach State College Belle Glade campus was recently awarded a $3,000 grant from the American Library Association to give students free access to the most popular or costly textbooks through the local public libraries.
The funding is part of the association’s Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries initiative offered in partnership with the Association of Rural and Small Libraries to address issues experienced by rural and small communities. Belle Glade welding lab gets new look

Palm Beach State College’s Belle Glade campus will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the patio of its Technical Education Center from 10 to 11 a.m. April 29 to unveil its newly renovated welding lab. The event will be livestreamed to the public.
