Tragedy prompts mom to go to college for the first time

Every morning, Lorna Beckford wakes up with inescapable grief.
Beckford has dealt with the pain since 2008, when her son, Derron, died in a motorcycle crash in Lake Worth at age 22. At the time, he was a Palm Beach State College student majoring in business. He left behind his mother, father Stephen, as well as three brothers, Kerrick, Steve and Troy.

Berman replaces Mast as morning commencement speaker

State Rep. Lori Berman has been tapped to replace U.S. Rep. Brian Mast as the keynote speaker for Palm Beach State College’s morning commencement ceremony Dec. 19.
Berman will speak at the 10 a.m. ceremony for graduates of the Associate in Science, Bachelor of Applied Science and Bachelor of Science degree programs and certificate programs. Mast was scheduled to speak but is unable to attend because a last-minute session has been scheduled for next week.

Chancellor Pumariega encourages PBSC graduates to “stay curious”

Palm Beach State College celebrated its more than 2,600 fall graduates during two commencement ceremonies today.
Madeline Pumariega, chancellor of the Florida College System, was the keynote speaker. She told graduates that she started her higher education at then Miami Dade Community College, where she played basketball.

Father and his two sons to cross stage together at PBSC commencement

When Donald Gray Jr. crosses the stage Friday to celebrate the completion of his Associate in Science degree in Nursing from Palm Beach State College, his two sons will be right behind him.
Gray, 52, and his youngest son, Nicholas, 23, completed their degree this summer and have secured jobs at Palm Beach County hospitals. His oldest son, Donald III, 25, finished his degree this fall term. Palm Beach State College leaders endorse governor’s graduation challenge

Palm Beach State College leaders today accepted Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s statewide “Ready, Set, Work” challenge calling for the achievement of 100 percent graduation rates for full-time students.

PBSC President Dennis Gallon to confer his final diplomas May 11

Palm Beach State College will hold two commencement ceremonies May 11 for the 2,838 students in the last graduating class under President Dennis Gallon’s 18-year tenure.
The first ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. for the 1,562 Associate in Arts transfer degree graduates, which represents 55 percent of the class.
