EMT spring grad featured in ABC News ‘The Orphans of COVID’ docuseries

Tre Burrows, a spring graduate of Palm Beach State College’s Emergency Medical Technician program who lost his mom to COVID-19 last August, is featured with his three sisters in an ABC News docuseries highlighting the impact of the disease on America’s children.
Titled “The Orphans of COVID: America’s Hidden Toll,” the docuseries first aired on May 12, coincidently on the day Burrows received his EMT-B College Credit Certificate. PBSC cancels nearly $2.3 million in student debt

Palm Beach State College has erased nearly $2.3 million in student debt for more than 3,100 students impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
The move helped students settle unpaid account balances incurred during the pandemic and get back on track this fall to continue their education.

Wheeler to encourage mental health dialogue as student trustee

Growing up, Tarruck Wheeler saw school as an insurmountable problem.
“It was always challenging for me,” says Wheeler, who ended up getting a GED.
At the time, Wheeler, now PBSC’s newly selected student trustee and a Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College student, was struggling with dyslexia. However, he did not realize it until he was officially diagnosed later in life. Once diagnosed, he got the courage to pursue a higher education.

PBSC revises facial coverings policy to prepare for full on-campus operations this fall

Palm Beach State College is revising its facial coverings policy in preparation for a full and safe return to campus operations this fall term.
Effective July 1, facial coverings will be recommended inside campus classrooms and offices, as well as outside when social distancing is not possible. Current guidelines related to social distancing, hand washing and area cleaning will remain in effect until further notice.

Editor’s note 2/15/2021: An earlier version of this story indicated that PBSC’s Palm Beach Gardens campus would serve as a county vaccine distribution site. That plan has changed.
Palm Beach State College and its nursing students are stepping up to help area residents who are on a waiting list for the COVID-19 vaccine.

PBSC Dental Hygiene grads take first manikin exam for state licensure

Palm Beach State College’s graduating Dental Hygiene students were set to take their state licensure exams this spring when COVID-19 prevented them from performing the one exam that requires treating a live patient. Otherwise ready to start their careers, no license meant no job. 
But with perseverance and an emergency order from the Florida Department of Health, the students took the clinical exam on Aug. 5—using a computerized manikin to simulate a patient.

PBSC helps public safety students impacted by Covid-19

Palm Beach State College has developed a plan to help more than 200 public safety students whose training was halted by the coronavirus outbreak.
Without the hands-on skills training required to complete their programs, students in the Police and Fire academies and the Paramedic and Emergency Medical Technician programs would remain in limbo, unable to graduate and take their state tests.

PBSC donates medical supplies to area hospitals

Palm Beach State College is donating medical supplies to area hospitals to assist with treating patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Staff from Wellington Regional Medical Center, one of the College’s 15 affiliate hospitals, picked up hundreds of surgical masks, gloves, gowns, hand sanitizers and other personalized protective equipment, from the Lake Worth campus on April 3.
