Explore how math relates to culture during PBSC’s Math Awareness Week

How does math fit into our culture? Find those answers and much more during Palm Beach State College’s 2023 Math Awareness Week April 3 to 6.

Themed, “Mathematics + Culture,” the week features more than 15 free lectures, demonstrations, activities, games and more. All presentations, which are free and open to the public, will be streamed collegewide. There will also be a problem of the day and week on the Math Awareness Week website with prizes for those who win.

Events include a presentation titled “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Higher Education,” from 11 a.m. to noon April 5 on the Palm Beach Gardens campus; Mathematics in the Mayan Culture from 2 to 3 p.m. April 5 in Palm Beach Gardens; and Chemistry + Culture from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the Lake Worth campus.

The week also features the following guest speakers:

    • Nikki Lineman (featured on TEDx), teacher, math coach and cofounder of Educating Now will speak on ethnomathematics
    • FAU math professors Dr. Stephen Locke and Dr. Warren McGovern
    • Bob Anstett, coordinator for digital initiatives at the Broward Library
    • Dr. Youssef Kaddoura, geomatics specialist at the University of Florida

There will also be a STEM career panel discussion moderated by David Jenks, PBSC Career Center manager.

The Math Awareness Week presentations allow students, staff and faculty to explore mathematics from many viewpoints. The week was organized by PBSC professors: Lauren Zatto, Abdullah Erdogan, Elka Ivanova, Anna Porro, Ana Lurie, Shadreck Chitsonga, Anthony Piccolino and Greg Maxwell.
