The show, titled “Cultural Mosaic,” runs from Jan. 12 to Feb. 5. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 12.

Those participating in the show are: Linda Behar, Misoo Filan, Stephen Futej, Isabel Gouveia, Kandy Lopez and Raheleh T. Filsoofi. They represent six different countries on three different continents.

“The mix of ethnic groups, languages and cultures that coexist within this diverse group is essential for the existence of this exhibition,” said Kandy Lopez, an assistant professor of visual arts at Daytona State College. “United by the common thread of visual language, these artists tackle contemporary issues of identity, culture, socioeconomics, the environment and regional and global politics.”

Some pieces that will be on display include Lopez’s “Swag” portraits which explores her fascination with and attraction to certain individuals who live and work in urban, often economically disadvantaged environments. The work investigates the “face” people front in public to survive their situations.

Other pieces show manifestations of internal emotional conflicts such as with Misoo Filan’s drawings that explore issues of female identity and childhood sexual abuse.

Using India ink and pencil drawings, her work recreates scenes of a struggle between attacker and victim and ultimately between the same attacker and a powerful mother, who spins her own hair into a delicate but powerful barrier that keeps her daughter safe.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The Art Gallery at Eissey Campus is located on the first floor of the BB building, 3160 PGA Blvd. For more information, call the gallery at 561-207-5015.
