Persistence Pays Off for Design Engineer

Debbie A. Plavinskas
Design Manager
A.A., 2009

Raised by a single mother who never had the opportunity to attend school, Debbie Plavinskas was motivated to let nothing stand in the way of her success. Her hard work paid off. Plavinskas is the first in her family to graduate from high school and college.

In 2003, she left her home in Trinidad and Tobago to come to the U.S. Shortly after, she enrolled at Palm Beach State College. Her most memorable experiences were speaking to her graduating class and also meeting mentor Tracy Joinson, an associate professor and Career Center manager, who kept her motivated and helped her obtain a position with BRPH Architects and Engineers.

Plavinskas later attended the Polytechnic Institute of New York University and earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, a field where minority women are still greatly underrepresented.

After working for several years in New York, she and her husband relocated to London. She works as a design manager for Overbury PLC and is currently overseeing a design project for Deutsche Bank.
